The potato price continued to decrease this week with the average national potato price on R66.75 per 10kg bag mostly due to volumes increasing by about 8% week on week. Interesting to note is that last year this time the potato price were 78% lower on R37.50.
Extra-large potatoes traded on R105 while the average small potato prices decreased to R42 per 10kg bag.
For now it looks like potato prices can stay on these levels due to higher expected volumes.
Tomato prices decreased by 21% to R7.99 last week with the warmer weather resulting in 14% higher volumes. We are however expecting higher prices in December again. The extra-large tomato price decreased to R8.98 while mediums decreased to R8.25 per kg.
Carrot prices decreased to R4.56 per kilogram, while the average large price decreased to R4.82 per kg. Price expectation were adjusted lower and it currently looks like prices can increase to between R6 and R7 during the festive season.
The average national onion price traded on R36.94 per 10kg bag and remained in its downward trend but we are however expecting a slight price increase during December again. Brown onions decreased to R34, White onions decreased to R38 while red onions decreased to R121 per 10 kg bag.
Pepper price fell back again to R12.59 per kilogram which was mostly driven by higher volumes and lower demand. Green peppers decreased to R11.23, yellow pepper prices decreased by 34% to R14.15 while red pepper prices are 30% lower on R13.05 per kilogram. Pepper prices are likely to stay on a lower level towards the end of year as production usually increases over this period.
Looking at other market prices, Cabbages prices decreased by 5% to R2.39, garlic prices increased to R44.23. Spinach prices decreased by 2% to R2.66 while sweet potato prices decreased to R11.45 last week. The Pumpkin price again decreased and is now trading on R3.15 per kilogram and is likely to continue in a downward trend for now.
