We are at the end of the month which means that we can expect most prices to increase over the next week. I however think the increase can be short lived with the average price likely to stay sideways in July and August.
The tomato price decreased by 7% the past week to R6.69 per kilogram with volumes increasing by 1%. Large tomatoes traded lower on R6.76, Mediums lower on R6.61 while small also decreased to R6.25. We saw a similar price trend in 2021 and if a similar trend is realised for the rest of this year, we can see prices remaining on a lower level until the end of September.
As expected, the average carrot price decreased by 18% last week to R4.23 per kilogram while large carrots traded on R4.56, mediums on R3.61 and smalls on R3.89. All sizes also decreased with large onions on R85, mediums on R98 and smalls on R83 per 10kg. We are seeing a similar trend compared to the 2019 production season and assuming we will continue to follow this trend, we can expect prices to stay on this higher level over the next week or so, but then start the decrease.
The average pepper price increased to R10.81 per kilogram while green pepper prices increased to R8.43, yellow peppers increased by 40% to R17.37 while Red peppers traded 14% higher on R12.89 per kilogram. Looking at other market prices, Cabbage prices decreased to R2.83 while Garlic prices increased by 15% to R116.90 which is 72% higher than a year ago. Would be interesting to see if we can reach the R130 mark that was set in 2020 during Covid, but if I look at the daily prices, it seems that this prices is starting to fall back again.
Spinach prices decreased to R5.29 while sweet potatoes decreased to R4.43 per kilogram. The latest pumpkin price increased to R2.69 per kilogram last week.
