The past week we saw the average national potato price decreasing by 8% to R50.05 per 10kg. The large price traded on R56.37, medium on R55.50 and smalls on R31.07 per 10kg. Mondials traded on R49, Sifras on R52 and Lanormas on R50 with the average price at Johannesburg on R51.48 per 10kg last week. It looks like we are following a similar price trend as in 2022 when volumes were a bit higher. If we stay with this trend, the average price will stay sideways over the next two months mostly due to higher supply levels while more volumes in September and October can put additional pressure on the price.

The tomato price decreased as expected and traded 29% lower on R12.47 per kilogram last week. Large tomatoes traded on R16.52, Mediums on R12.94 and smalls on R11.66. The average prices is still 70% higher than a year ago with 11% lower volumes reported last week than a year ago. We opened this week with significantly lower prices already and is therefore expecting the average price to come under severe pressure this week.

The average carrot price decreased by 13% last week to R5.56 per kilogram and like tomatoes, I think that we might see significantly lower prices over the winter months. Large carrots traded on R5.98, mediums on R4.70 and smalls on R5.34.

The latest onion price decreased to R83.80 per 10kg the past week with brown onion prices trading on R83, red onions on R111 and white onions on R86 per 10kg. Large onions traded on R87, mediums on R86 and smalls on R73 per 10kg. We will probably see higher volumes on the markets over the next four months, which could keep prices on a slightly downward trajectory until August.

The average pepper price decreased to R11.34 per kilogram last week while green pepper prices decreased to R7.53, yellow peppers decreased to R16.74 while Red peppers traded 15% lower on R22.59 per kilogram. The price might stabilize around current levels for now, but we are expecting an upward trend from July onwards.

Looking at other market prices, Cabbage prices decreased to R3.67 while Garlic prices increased to R79.90 which is 30% higher than a year ago. Garlic volumes came under pressure the past month which drove prices upward. Spinach prices decreased by 11% to R4.67, sweet potatoes decreased to R4.87 while pumpkin prices increased to R2.91 per kilogram.
