The average weaner calf price dropped by 2% last week to R34.69 per kilogram, while the average A2/3 carcass price decreased to R53.28. However, the C-grade price increased to R47.59. It still seems that A and C-grade prices may continue to rise, and calf prices might trade upward again from mid-December.

The feeder lamb price declined to R36.95 per kilogram, now 9% lower than a year ago. Producers are currently under significant pressure, creating a negative sentiment on most auctions as well. The A2/3 carcass price also decreased to R81.59, while the C2/3 price dropped to R59.44. I still believe that A-grade prices may trend sharply upward from here but may not reach the R90 mark over Christmas.

The good news is that wool prices have increased by 6%, with the RWS price higher at R176.31, and the non-RWS price rising to R156.35 per kilogram. The weakening Rand has also contributed to higher prices, while prices in Australia have increased by 2% due to improved demand from China, opening up the market and instilling a positive sentiment. These factors could further support our prices this week.

Poultry prices rose last week, with frozen chicken prices increasing to R37.98, fresh prices rising to R38.48, and IQF prices lower at R34.05 per kilogram. I still believe that our current price levels can be maintained at least until the end of the year.

Pork prices however decreased last week, with baconer prices at R36.76, porker prices dropping to R37.30, while the latest sausage pork price increased to R27.51 per kilogram. Expectations are for lower prices this week, but the weaker Rand and higher import parity prices, along with higher poultry prices, could also support pork prices.

Small goat prices increased last week to R49.93, medium goats stand at R40.14, with goat ewe prices 6% lower at R37.05.
