The average banana price increased by a massive 18% to R14 per kilogram or R252 per 18kg box and is now 44% higher than a year ago with the current volumes about 30% lower than a year ago. The lower volumes are due to less imports from Mozambique and the political tension they have there. Expect prices however to get some resistance now and maybe trade closer to R10 over the next month or so.
Apple prices dropped by about 2% to R11.59 per kilogram and is still 42% higher than last year this time due to 15% lower volumes reported year on year. Expect more volumes to gradually push prices lower over the next two months.
As expected, the pear price stabilized and increased to R8.34 per kilogram and can remain on current levels for now.
Orange prices decreased by a massive 32% to R8.89 per kilogram, but is still about 18% higher compared to a year ago. This massive drop was due to 90% more volumes on the markets last week. We are expecting prices to stay in this downward trend for now and that lower juice prices this season can result in prices to lower this year compared to last season.
As expected, Avo prices dropped by another 22% to R11.99 per kilogram and is now 8% lower than a year ago. Variety-wise, Fuertes decreased to R15, Hass dropped sharply to R8 while Pinkertons stayed on R17 per kilogram. I think the avo price can stabilize around these levels for now.
The average grape price traded 4% higher on R23.57 per kilogram last week, with volumes decreasing by 5% week on week. Compared to last year, we’re now seeing 10% lower prices due to 49% higher volumes currently on the markets. Pineapples traded higher at R15.05, lemons increased to R6.97 and can stay in a downward for now while blueberries traded 28% higher at R196 per kilogram.
